You should submit your fully complete Preliminary Application Form (PAF) along with all supporting documents by 16 December 2011. We encourage applicants to submit their applications earlier than this if possible. Please see the link given below for instructions on how to apply.

Research Methods Course 2012 in Tanzania 25/11/2011

Introduction: This is a two weeks research methods course suitable for medical researchers, social scientists, and students undertaking professional training (MSc, MMed, MPH, and PhD). Highly experienced researchers from the Tanzania National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Mwanza Centre, Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) will conduct this course.

Course Objectives:

a) To introduce methods used in health research

b) To develop expertise in the use of research methods introduced in the course

c) To enable participants to select the right methods for future research projects

Venue: National Institute for Medical Research, Mwanza Centre, Isamilo area, Mwanza city

Dates: Monday 19th to Friday 30th March 2012

Course Details: The course will cover selected topics including Epidemiology, public health, statistical methods, qualitative research methods, laboratory methods, field methods, and introduction to clinical trials and research ethics. Participants will learn how to read and understand research literature. Experienced researchers, who will share their experiences with participants as well as teach the latest developments in research techniques, will deliver lectures. In addition, participants will work on practical sessions to enhance the understanding of topics and to build skills in key techniques. Discussions and group activities will be organised to facilitate participant interaction along with some special seminars on important epidemiological Issues of the day.

Course Fee: There is no tuition fee required to attend this course. A fee of $100 for participants from outside Tanzania and Tsh. 160,000.00/- for Tanzanian participants will be charged to cover for daily group lunch, opening and closing dinner, training materials and manuals, and registration. Participants will meet their travel and accommodation expenses.

Award: A certificate of attendance will be issued to each participant on successful completion of the training.

An armed gang of kidnappers has abducted three tourists and killed a fourth in the city of Timbuktu in northern Mali, security sources said.

Two of the hostages are Dutch and the third a South African who may have lived in the UK, reports say. The nationalities have not been confirmed.

The dead man, said to be German, was shot dead trying to resist the gang.

It is believed to be the first time foreigners have been abducted in Timbuktu, once popular with tourists.

However, a group linked to al-Qaeda has attacked Westerners in nearby regions.

Following several kidnappings, the UK has warned its citizens not to travel to northern Mali, including Timbuktu.

On Thursday, two French geologists were kidnapped by an armed gang in the eastern village of Hombori.
Police protection
The Timbuktu gunmen burst in as the four were dining in a restaurant on the central square of the ancient city.

They ordered the tourists there to follow them, a customer at Amanar restaurant told the Associated Press.

The owner of a hotel, where the four have previously stayed during their travel around Mali, told the BBC News website that one of them, a German, had been shot dead when he refused to get into the attackers' vehicle.

He said he had been told by colleagues in Timbuktu that all foreigners in the city had been gathered at the police headquarters and would be flown to the capital, Bamako, on Saturday.

The incidents are the latest in a series of abductions of foreigners believed to be the work of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqim).

Correspondents say Aqim has bases in the northern Mali desert from which it organises raids and kidnappings, and traffics weapons and drugs.
French hostages
French soldiers have joined Mali's army in the hunt for the French pair kidnapped in Hombori, according to AFP.

The pair were the first Westerners in Mali to be kidnapped south of the River Niger.

The captives were named as Philippe Verdon and Serge Lazarevic, in documents seen by AFP.

They had been sent by the company Mande Construction Immobiliere to take soil samples in the Hombori region where it planned to build a cement factory.

A security guard at their hotel said that "the kidnappers were armed to the teeth".

"I was tied up and told to point out the rooms of the Frenchmen, whom they brutally took away," he said.

Al-Qaeda-linked fighters have in the past brought hostages into northern Mali from neighbouring countries, such as Niger where four French nationals - still being held - were kidnapped in September 2010.
'High threat'
Huge swathes of the Sahel region south of the Sahara Desert have been rendered off-limits to foreigners.

Timbuktu is one of the many former tourist destinations in Mali that foreign embassies have deemed too dangerous for visitors due to the risk of kidnapping by Aqim.

The UK Foreign Office website says there is a "high threat from terrorism" in Mali.

"Terrorists have been involved in kidnaps in the region, on a number of occasions leading to the murder of the hostages," it said.

"We believe that further kidnap attempts are likely."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Funding available for African and Canadian students as part of 2012 graduate research grants Waterloo, Canada – November 23 – Graduate students from Africa and Canada will have the opportunity to benefit from $300,000 (CAD) in funding, as the Africa Initiative today announces a call for applications for the 2012 graduate research grant program.   Grants of up to $10,000 (CAD) will be awarded to as many as 15 African students applying to study in Canada and 15 Canadian students to conduct field-based research in Africa. Applications for the Africa Initiative Graduate Research Grant, which can be found online at http://www.africaportal.org/exchange, must be submitted by January 15, 2012. "There is already great enthusiasm for the 2012 grant competition," said Nelson K. Sewankambo, director of the Africa Initiative. Colonel Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam has been captured, Libyan officials say.

He was taken by fighters near the southern town of Obari and flown to the city of Zintan in the north. Saif al-Islam told a journalist he was well.

He is the last key Gaddafi family member to be seized or killed. Libya's new prime minister says he will get a fair trial in Libya.

Saif al-Islam, 39, is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity.

A militia force allied to the ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) said he had been captured in the desert about 50km (30 miles) west of Obari, and taken to their base in Zintan in the north.

The International Criminal Court has a warrant for the arrest of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi. Ideally ICC judges would like to see him tried in The Hague.

But they have quickly realised that is not likely to happen. The Libyan authorities are committed to trying members of the former regime inside Libya.

Allowing Saif al-Islam to be taken out of the country would be hugely unpopular. Quite possibly the Zintan brigade soldiers who now hold him would refuse to transfer him to the central government. And Libya is not a signatory to the ICC.

So instead, the court is already working to try to ensure a fair trial inside Libya. For Saif al-islam Gaddafi a trial in his own country means he could face the death penalty. That's something that would not have happened if his father had signed up Libya to the ICC, where the maximum sentence is life in prison.

• Political impact of capture

A commander of the Zintan militia, Wisam Dughaly, said Saif al-Islam had been captured along with several aides as they tried to smuggle him out to neighbouring Niger.

Fighters said they were taken without a shot being fired.

"At the beginning he was very scared. He thought we would kill him," one of his captors, named as Ahmed Ammar, told Reuters news agency.

Libyan TV showed pictures of Saif al-Islam on the plane to Zintan with bandages on his left hand.

Asked by Reuters reporter Marie-Louise Gumuchian during the flight if he was feeling all right, he said simply: "Yes." He added that he had been injured in a Nato air strike a month ago.

Interim Prime Minister Abdurrahim al-Keib told reporters in Zintan: "We assure Libyans and the world that Saif al-Islam will receive a fair trial."

He added that he was happy for him to remain in Zintan rather than be transferred to the capital, Tripoli.

"Our brothers and sisters here and the authorities are definitely trustworthy. We trust their ability to be able take care of this person," Mr Keib said.

The Zintan fighters, who make up one of the powerful militia factions in the country, have said they plan to keep Saif al-Islam until they could hand him over to Tripoli.

Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam said Gaddafi's son would face justice in Libya itself.
