Measure Evaluation Population and Reproductive Health (PRH)

Name: Small Grants to support Research in Family Planning and Reproductive Health

Through its small grant program, PRH is requesting proposals to increase evidence base in family planning (FP). The primary objectives of this program are threefold:
  • To support research efforts of developing country researchers and research institutions to provide needed information that informs FP policy and programmatic decision-making.
  • To increase use of existing data that informs local and/or global FP programs. Such data sources may include the DHS, SPA, BSS, and high-quality, country-specific data.
  • To increase use of research findings by policy and programmatic decision-makers not traditionally involved in the research process.
Eligibility: country or regional academic institutions or centres, non-for profit and for-profit organisations, parastatals  and research-focused NGOs. All candidates must be from USAID's FP priority countries.

Award: The base amount for a small grant is US$6000, which is intended to cover basic research expenses for a nine-month timeline. However, the total amount of the grant will be based on proposed budgets and is expected to be higher, so as to cover the costs of the planned data use activities. Additional funding may also be provided for research projects that include supplementary data collection. Travel to national or regional conferences to present the research findings may be requested.

Deadline: Concept papers are due by October 16, 2011.

Further information: For more information or inquiries visit website www.cpc.unc.edu/measure/prh/research/request-for-proposals

Malaria Experimental Genetics

 4-10 March 2012
Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, Hinxton, Cambridge
Deadline for applications 4 November 2011

Course summary

This laboratory-based advanced course will give participants a working knowledge of and practical experience in cutting edge Plasmodium experimental genetics techniques, from designing gene targeting vectors and creating transgenic parasites to phenotyping the strains that result. The goal is to facilitate the participants' own research careers by exposing them to state-of-the-art experimental approaches, while discussing the advantages and limitations of each approach.
The week-long practical course will cover experimental approaches to both the human parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) and the rodent parasite (Plasmodium berghei). The practical work will include several novel technological approaches, including production of gene targeting constructs using recombineering, which eliminates the need for PCR and restriction enzyme based ligation, and advanced molecular phenotyping approaches including next generation RNA sequencing and comparative mass spectrometry. The laboratory-based programme will be complemented by specific lectures in topical areas as well as a panel of distinguished guest speakers, who will present the latest research in the field.

Programme

The overall strategy will be to follow a Plasmodium experimental genetics experiment from conception to completion, and will cover work with both P.berghei and P.falciparum. Topics to be covered will include:
Gene targeting vector construction
  • recombineering-based approaches to vector construction
  • consideration of the relative merits of different conditional expression approaches.
Transfection and genotyping
  • mechanics of transfection in both P. berghei and P. falciparum
  • verification of targeting using PCR and PFGE.
Molecular phenotyping
  • imaging approaches
  • comparative mass spectrometry
  • application of next generation sequencing to transcriptional profiling
  • flow cytometry-based phenotyping platforms.
