Job Description
Development of a multipurpose micromagnetic and micromechanical simulation platform

A PhD position is available to join the research team that develops the multipurpose magnetic software platform “MuMax”. In a collaboration between the DyNaMat and EELAB groups at UGent, we are currently developing this high-performance simulation package that allows to simulate, on the one hand, the energy efficiency of electrical steels as used in electromagnetic devices, and, the read and write processes on e.g. hard disks on the other hand. In all applications, the complex magnetic processes can be determined by carefully combining Maxwell equations with micromechanic and micromagnetic equations. The software resulting algorithms will be implemented on the most modern and time efficient GPU hardware available (GPU: Graphical Processing Units). Due to its immense computational power compared to standard CPU computations, the software will open a complete range of new research opportunities to understand the rich physics of magnetic materials that can be exploited in various engineering applications.

In practice this PhD work will focus in the first place on the development of numerical algorithms to solve large systems of coupled equations in magnetism. Depending on the candidates’ interest, the focus can be on the efficient GPU-implementation of the developed algorithms or on the engineering applications.

Profile
We are currently looking for a new PhD student with a masters degree in either electromechanical, electrical or physical engineering or a masters degree in physics. The research topic is the development of algorithms that efficiently solve complex coupled equations in a magnetic context. An interest in programming numerical code is required.

POST-DOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE: GLOBAL CHANGE IN AFRICAN MOUNTAINS

POST-DOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE: GLOBAL CHANGE IN AFRICAN
MOUNTAINS
The University of Pretoria is offering a post-doctoral position on global change. Global
change denotes the interaction between climate and other global drivers and human
practice with respect to the ecosystem services, food and natural resources for humans.
The effect of global change is likely to be observed clearly in mountain areas because the
altitudinal variation in climate and natural resources in mountains is likely to provide a
sensitive indicator of global change. The position is based at the Centre for
Environmental Studies (CFES) at the University of Pretoria and funded by the Swiss
Development and Cooperation Agency (SDC) through the Food and Agriculture
Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, with technical oversight by the Mountain
Research Initiative (MRI) at the University of Bern (Switzerland). The position will
promote global change monitoring and research in African mountains, available
immediately until December 31st 2012. Your responsibilities will be:
a) Develop and promote the network of researchers focused on global change research in
the mountains of Sub-Saharan Africa, in close collaboration with the MRI at the
University of Bern, Switzerland. Your work will include travel to Western and Eastern
Africa to meet scientists and to assist with the planning, facilitation and funding of an
Africa-wide network of research on global change in African mountains.
b) Facilitate the participation by the above research network in preparation activities and
documentation leading to the Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC, the IGBP Planet
Under Pressure Conference Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, and
Conferences of the Parties of the UNFCCC, UNCBD and UNCCD.
Become part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists on the African continent. You will
obtain in-depth experience in research on global change. You will also gain extensive
experience in the interaction between the scientific world and the international treaties
and bodies around global change (e.g. IPCC, UNCBD), in planning for the Rio+20
conference and other similar events. Your overall insight into the continent-wide research
will enable you to generate at least one scientific article at the end of 2011, as well as a
body of more popular articles on global change in African mountains. You will work
closely with the MRI and CFES. The postdoctoral position includes a stipend of US$
16000 (approx. ZAR 112000) per annum, as well as extensive provision for travel and
project development.
Interested persons should send by 30 April 2011 a C.V. and a statement of interest
indicating why you would be appropriate for this position (300 words maximum) :

Call for Proposals: Research Project on Gender, Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is a strategic alliance of members, partners and international agricultural research centers that mobilizes science to benefit the poor.

Also Via PWESCR - Programme on Women's Economic, Social, Cultural Rights

Call for Proposals: Research Project on Gender, Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security

The complex and dynamic relationships among climate change, agriculture and food security and how they affect men and women differently are not well understood. Due to scarce gender-disaggregated data, there has been limited research on how men and women adapt to climate variability and change to maintain food security in agricultural systems, as well as the incentives, constraints and opportunities women farmers have to pursue farming practices that reduces emission of GHGs. How climate risk affects the livelihoods of men and women, and the type of climate information that will assist both men and women in making ‘climate smart decisions’ are also areas of research that have not received enough attention. Therefore, CCAFS is searching for scientists who are interested in conducting research on gender issues related to the climate change, agriculture, and food security nexus.

Proposals must be submitted by 1 May 2011.

CCAFS will award women scientists enrolled in a PhD program or interested in a post doctoral opportunity, and who are citizens of and affiliated with an institution in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Bangladesh, India, or Nepal to a research grant of $35,000

Proposals must:
1. Demonstrate and contribute to understanding the linkages between climate change and gender more specifically, while developing policy-relevant findings on climate change, agriculture, and food security more generally.
2. Build research capacity of women scientists in partner institutions and increase their representation in agricultural research.

TERMS OF REFERENCE

I. SCOPE OF THE WORK
To design and conduct a research project on a key topic/issue related to gender, climate change, agriculture, and food security. Topics may include but are not limited to:

Differences between men and women’s access to, and use of, climate/agricultural information
Institutional arrangements that provide incentives and deliver benefits for women to mitigate greenhouse gases through the adoption of soil, water, cropping, livestock or agroforestry management methods that reduce GHG emissions.
Adaptation strategies, both technical and institutional, that help men and women cope with the impacts of a changing climate on agriculture and food security
Differentiated impacts of climate change on food security and nutrition
Risk management strategies through the use of institutional services (i.e. safety nets, technical advice, financial services) differentiated by gender.
Relative vulnerability of men and women, and of female-headed versus male-headed households, to climate change impacts on agriculture and food security
Roles of women and men in local food systems, such as small-scale trade and local food reserves, in adapting to a changing climate
Gender-differentiated allocation of household labor and capital in agricultural adaptation and mitigation
How national legislation and policy on mitigation and adaptation can best support gender equality
Research sponsored by CCAFS is aimed at helping to inform policies and practices that reduce the negative impacts of climate change for people who depend on agriculture as a source of their livelihoods, without jeopardizing food security.
This call targets female PhD scientists and students enrolled in a PhD program based in CCAFS initial target countries. Scientists awarded the grant will be partly supervised by a CGIAR scientist and will have full access to an electronic science library. The scientist should also be supervised by the institution she is affiliated with. Those awarded are required to submit financial and narrative progress reports every six months to the supervisor. The expected output of the research project will be a publishable paper and a presentation on the awarded research topic.

Download the full call for proposals and the application form.

Proposals must be submitted by 1 May 2011.
