Call for Applications for the Short Course Awards (SCA) 2012 in Australia

Each country is eligible for certain courses which may differ from country to country. Please read the information on this page carefully, as well as information in the "General Information" and "How to apply" documents. Once you have done this, scroll to the bottom of this page and click the link titled "Countries and Courses" to see which course (or courses) your country is eligible for.

You should submit your fully complete Preliminary Application Form (PAF) along with all supporting documents by 16 December 2011. We encourage applicants to submit their applications earlier than this if possible. Please see the link given below for instructions on how to apply.

Introduction: This is a two weeks research methods course suitable for medical researchers, social scientists, and students undertaking professional training (MSc, MMed, MPH, and PhD). Highly experienced researchers from the Tanzania National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Mwanza Centre, Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) will conduct this course.

Course Objectives:

a) To introduce methods used in health research

b) To develop expertise in the use of research methods introduced in the course

c) To enable participants to select the right methods for future research projects

Venue: National Institute for Medical Research, Mwanza Centre, Isamilo area, Mwanza city

Dates: Monday 19th to Friday 30th March 2012

Course Details: The course will cover selected topics including Epidemiology, public health, statistical methods, qualitative research methods, laboratory methods, field methods, and introduction to clinical trials and research ethics. Participants will learn how to read and understand research literature. Experienced researchers, who will share their experiences with participants as well as teach the latest developments in research techniques, will deliver lectures. In addition, participants will work on practical sessions to enhance the understanding of topics and to build skills in key techniques. Discussions and group activities will be organised to facilitate participant interaction along with some special seminars on important epidemiological Issues of the day.

Requirements: Applicants should have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field of subject and either working or doing post-graduate studies in health research environment.

Course Fee: There is no tuition fee required to attend this course. A fee of $100 for participants from outside Tanzania and Tsh. 160,000.00/- for Tanzanian participants will be charged to cover for daily group lunch, opening and closing dinner, training materials and manuals, and registration. Participants will meet their travel and accommodation expenses.

Award: A certificate of attendance will be issued to each participant on successful completion of the training.
