Rio Tinto Coal Mozambique Senior Mine Surveyor

Rio Tinto has recently acquired control of Riversdale in Mozambique to form Rio Tinto Coal Mozambique(RTCM).  RTCM currently has 2 projects, the Benga project, which is set to produce first coal in 2012, and the Zambeze project, which is at feasibility stage.  RTCM has an expansive coal resource and a very significant growth profile.
 
We are looking for a Senior Mine Surveyor to head up the Mine Survey team and report in to the Manager Technical Services.  Mine Survey is an integral function of technical services to measure and reconcile business (and mining contractor) performance, as well as providing statutory and corporate governance reporting requirements.  You would be responsible for managing a team of people and provide timely and accurate survey support to site operations in order to achieve Annual Operating Plan requirements.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure all mining activities have appropriate field control to ensure every opportunity to implement designs according to plan.  Routine monitoring of control will be required to ensure it is up to date and is still available
  • Ensure appropriate field survey is undertaken to allow accurate calculation of month end physical quantities for all-material movements (including coal) before end of month
  • Maintain a Monthly Coal Stocks Reconciliation Reporting System inclusive of in-pit inventory, ROM stocks, Product stocks, Rail Load Out stocks and Port Stocks.
  • Allocate surveying resources (field/aerial survey) as appropriate to achieve tasks in a timely manner
  • Ensure digital terrain model is routinely updated in the mine software package, with latest topographical data
  • Maintain spatial (GIS) infrastructure assets database
  • Maintenance of reconciliation database as required with signed off month end physicals
  • Utilisation of the latest techniques of surveying (i.e. Trimble)
  • Ensure that the laser register is maintained for all Laser Devices in compliance with any Mozambican Govt. Regulations and internal RTCM B5 Radiation Management Standard
  • Prepare and issue Statutory Mine Working plans in accordance with any Mozambican Govt. Regulations
  • Liaise with operations to ensure that sufficient access to areas is available with minimal production impacts
  • Ensure personal compliance with Rio Tinto, RTCM and Benga Mine safety systems (isolation, Take-5's, JHA's, Golden Rules, incident reporting, etc).
  • Complete safety leadership interaction, minimum of two (2) per month, with focus on identifying undesirable behaviours in an effort to improve current safety practices across site.
  • Develop an annual Personal Safety Plan and delivery initiatives documented within.
  • Develop and implement controls to manage risk associated with survey function.
  • Hold Weekly Survey Tool Box meetings with the Survey Team
  • Seek to improve and implement safety improvements of the survey team.
Technical Requirements
 
  • Tertiary Qualifications in Surveying from an accredited institution
  • Membership in of Institute of Mine Surveyors or similar.
  • Registration with a globally recognized board of surveying will be highly desired
  • Minimum of (3) years surveying experience preferably with exposure to surveying in open cut coal mining
  • Practical understanding of GPS, GIS, EDM and laser scanning systems in Mining Surveying
  • Practical understanding of the application of Photogrammetry in mining environments
  • Knowledge and proficiency in maintaining GPS surveying RTK correction networks
  • CAD mining software, preferably MineScape and / or Minex
  • GIS software, preferably Arc Viewer and / or similar
  • Excellent numerical analysis and data validation skills
  • Knowledge of relevant mining legislation and industry practices
