Police nab student over 'illegal' gun possession.

Police nab student over 'illegal' gun possession.
Kagera Regional Police Commander Henry Mwaibambe.
Police officials in Bukoba, Kagera Region, have arrested a secondary school student alleged to have been possessing a gun illegally.

Justine Mwijage, a Form Two student from Peace Secondary School in Bukoba Municipality, was arrested at a guest house in Geita.

Kagera Regional Police Commander Henry Mwaibambe said yesterday that the boy was arrested following a tip off from wananchi.

"We have been following up the boy following the tip off. We arrested him in Geita and he took us to a guest house where he was putting up. Upon searching his room we found the gun stashed under the bed in his room," he said.

Mwaibambe said police got the information from the former Bukoba Municipal Mayor, Dr Anatory Aman, the school boy's grandfather, who said his gun, a revolver, had gone missing while he was on safari.

He said following the information police arrested Dr Aman, who is also the Kagaondo ward councilor. But he was released on bail after his grandson had been arrested with the gun.

Mwaibambe said although the gun has been recovered, Dr Aman would still face legal action for mishandling it.
"We are still investigating the incident, and when we are ready we will take the two to court to face charges," he said.
