The East African Court of Justice (EACJ) for the first time is participating in the EAC Jua Kali/Nguvu Kazi that is currently ongoing at the Gikondo Expo Ground in Kigali, Rwanda. The court has seized the opportunity to sensitize the public on the role, operations and procedures of the regional court.
At the expo, exhibitors and the general public have shown interest in learning more about the Court especially how to approach and use its services in settling disputes regarding business within the EAC Partner States.
The exhibitors and show-goers have registered their complaints of lack of information and knowledge on the existence of the Court rather than calling it the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UN ICTR) and appealed for continuous sensitization on the role of the Court among the East African citizens.
Over 1,000 participants attending the 15th Jua Kali appreciated the judicial services provided by the EACJ to protect the rights of the business community through ensuring adherence and compliance of the Treaty for the Establishment the East African Community and the EAC Customs Union and Common Market Protocols during their implementation.
The exhibitors also commended the EACJ for realizing the needs of the citizens to be given justice they deserve and opening of the EACJ Sub-registries in the Partner States' Capitals where the aggrieved parties can file their complaints for settlement in Court.
In the implementation of integration agenda conflicts may raise, therefore there is need for EACJ to increase awareness and the support to reach to the East Africans through these exhibitions and other sensitization mechanisms to educate the Public on the existence of the Court and how to use it.
The Court pledged to continue working closely with EAC Organs and Institutions, EAC Ministries in various outreach programs to increase awareness to the EAC citizens on the activities of the East African Court of Justice in promoting the regional integration agenda.
During the exhibition a number of EACJ publication materials were distributed to the participants and these included; the EACJ Rules of Procedure, Rules of Arbitrations, Court User's Guide, and the 10th Anniversary Reports and also encouraged the participants to make use of website of the Court http://www.eacj.org for further information.
