The Global Technology Field (GTF) Sustainable Lifecycle Engineering (SLE) supports the Siemens Sectors in the development and assessment of environmentally preferable products and technologies.
Siemens recognizes that four megatrends - demographic change, urbanization, climate change and globalization, will significantly influence the availability of water, material and energy resources in the future. The objective is to develop forward-thinking ideas and solutions that minimize or eliminate environmental impacts at source. Siemens is continuously improving the performance and environmental profile of products and technologies through innovation, eco-design and selection of new materials. The successful implementation of such projects is achieved through a combination of knowledge and practical experience of its employees.
The SLE GTF supports the Siemens commitment to sustainable development through applied research and consulting on products, processes and solutions. The SLE GTF with its employees in Berlin, Princeton, Beijing and Copenhagen offers business units the following services:
- Life cycle assessment (LCA) according to ISO 14040/44,
- Eco-efficient optimization of services and material solutions for sustainability,
- Sustainability solutions in manufacturing processes according to economic, environmental and technology factors, integration of environmental requirements in PLM process,
- Solutions for green supply chain management, carbon management (GHG protocol) and water footprint.

The successful candidate for this position will support the SLE GTF in analyzing the substitution and recycling potential of certain materials that might be supply constrained in the future and developing plausible scenarios. The analysis of optimized mix of substitution and recycling will be achieved through (but not limited to) the evaluation of global and regional material flows, environmental life cycle assessment and techno-economic assessment of materials and technologies. The ideal candidate will have preferably a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or related field or 5 years or more experience in R&D topics such as sustainability, environmental life cycle assessment, end-of-life management of products and a proven track record of independent applied research and/or consulting.

Responsibilities:
1. Perform environmental assessments using LCA based tools:
- Product and process analyses, product/process modeling and parameterization, along with product/process rating.
- Identifying ecological weak points in the process chain and in the product lifecycle, with a view to deriving potential for improvement.
2. Map material flows and identify substitution opportunities
3. Devise concept for the re-use, recycling and refurbishment of products and solutions (e.g. comparing alternative recycling or end-of-life scenarios).
4. Develop future material use scenarios, including substitution and recycling potential.
5. Develop ranking schemes to compare novel technologies with conventional solutions on the basis of parameters such as performance, environmental impact and life cycle cost
6. Manage the technical and administrative aspect of projects in the context of sustainable product/service assessment and development.
7. Serve as a key expert in the field of material science for the GTF and its Siemens internal and external partners
8. Identify potential leads and prepare proposals towards government-funded research
