Zambia Seeks Financial Donations For Ex-Leader's Funeral
LUSAKA, June 21 (Bernama) -- The Zambian government has opened a special account at the central bank where people wishing to contribute to expenses for the funeral of former president Fredrick Chiluba should deposit the funds, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Zambia Daily Mail report Tuesday.

Zambian President Rupiah Banda on Sunday announced a seven-day state funeral for Chiluba, who died in the early hours of Saturday.

Ronnie Shikapwasha, the government spokersperson, said well- wishers were welcome to contribute to expenses on the funeral of Chiluba, who ruled Zambia from 1991-2001 and that they should channel their donations through district and provincial administrations while those in Lusaka should take their contributions to cabinet office.

"Members of the public wishing to contribute to this cause are advised to channel their contributions through the district and provincial administrations countrywide," the official was quoted as saying by the paper.

Chiluba becomes the second president of the southern African nation to die after the country lost another leader in 2008, Levy Mwanawasa, who was a sitting president.

Chiluba, 68, was credited for having brought democracy to Zambia in 1991 when he defeated long-standing leader Kenneth Kaunda during the country's first multiparty elections that year.

The former trade union leader liberalised the country's economy, which included among other things privatising all parastatal firms, a situation that led to massive job losses. Some of the people who lost jobs in the 1990s were still fighting for their terminal benefits.

He will be buried next Monday.
