Ministry Officials and Business Enterprises of Tanzania discuss Uganda- Tanzania Crude Oil Pipeline Project
The Ministry of Energy and Minerals and Representatives of the Business Enterprises of Tanzania convened a meeting on Monday, 28th March 2016 in Dar es Salaam to discuss the critical role of Tanzania in the development of the Uganda-Tanzania Crude Oil Pipeline Project.
The Meeting was chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and was also attended by the two Deputy Permanent Secretaries and other Senior Officials of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. Also in attendance, were senior Officials from Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and from the Tanzania Port Authority.
During the opening, the Chair emphasized the Government's readiness and willingness to work hand-in -hand with the Private Sector to ensure that all projects have the input of the Private Sector and thereby optimally benefit the rapid development and transformation of Tanzania. The Chair requested the Private Sector to explore all possible ways in which they can enhance their participation in the promotion and development of the Crude Oil Pipeline Project from Hoima, Uganda to Tanga, Tanzania.
The Chair invited the representative of the TPDC to make a formal presentation on the said pipeline and the opportunities therein, after the presentation, the Private Sector was invited to make comments and contributions.
After intensive discussions, the meeting resolved the following:
1. To establish a high level Coordinating Committee consisting of the representatives of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Private Enterprises in Tanzania, to promote and develop the Crude Oil Pipeline from Uganda to Tanga, Tanzania.
2. To promote and develop a Regional Value Corridor that shall link the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. The Value Corridor shall emanate from Tanga, Tanzania, through Uganda, DRC and up to the Port of Banana in the DRC.
3. To develop within the Value Corridor other Anchor Projects such as:
· A Hub Port at Tanga Region, Tanzania.
· Cross-border Gas Pipeline.
· Cross-border Freight and Passenger Railway.
· Cross-border Fiber Optic.
· Cross-border Multi-product Pipeline.
4. To promote and develop key strategic locations along the Value Corridor, new Corridor Anchor Towns (CATs), designed as Special Economic Zones. The (CATs) shall be designed to act as:
· Centres of Training and empowering Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) so as to create Social-economic mobility and transformation.
· Attract Regional and international capital to further socio-economic transformation.
In conclusion, the Private enterprises of Tanzania pledge their full commitment and support to ensure the success of the short - and long-term interests relating to this Project and the Value Corridor.
