UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA FACULTY OF HUMANITIES
THE HUMAN ECONOMY PROJECT: SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FULL-TIME DOCTORAL STUDY
The interdisciplinary Human Economy Project in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Pretoria is offering a number of scholarships for full-time doctoral study, starting in 2012.
In order to be considered for a Human Economy scholarship, candidates must
- Qualify to register for a doctoral degree in an appropriate discipline in the faculty.
- Have obtained excellent results in their prior studies
- Intend, or be willing, to undertake research of relevance to the Human Economy project
The University of Pretoria's Human Economy project is part of a network of international scholars engaged in researching the possibility of alternatives to the models by which economies were organised in the 20th century. The point of departure is that the main 20th century models – state socialism and the free market – have left the early 21st century world in a condition of massive inequality and limited freedom.
Do we need new abstract models or more information about what people in different parts of the world actually do to insert themselves into the existing, unequal economy? What motives and ambitions sustain
their endeavours? How may their efforts be given greater recognition and reward? How can we conceive of a more human economy?
These questions are of potential relevance and significance to students in disciplines such as History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, Social Anthropology, Development Studies, Philosophy and Literature.
The Human Economy project has drawn a significant number of Postdoctoral Fellows in various disciplines from around the world to the University of Pretoria. Doctoral students associated with the project will have the opportunity to work closely with these Postdoctoral Fellows as well as to benefit from the project's international links.
The value of the Human Economy doctoral scholarships is R120 000 per annum, to include research funds, for a maximum of three years.
Applications are invited from around the world, but special consideration will be given to applicants from the African continent. The ability to speak and write fluent English is a strong requirement. Applicants should, ideally, be in a position to commence study at the University of Pretoria by July 2012.
Closing date for applications: 16 April 2012.
