African Union Commission: Head of Interpretation Division

The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for the position of Head of Interpretation Division in the Conference Services Directorate.

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

2. Major duties andresponsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the Director ofConference Management andPublication, the responsibilities and duties ofthe incumbent shall include the following:

a. Formulateand implement in close consultation with the Director appropriate policies andplans for the activities of the Division;
b. Organiseand coordinate the work of regular and freelance interpreters;
c. Developa database of reputable interpreters in AU Member States;
d. Assesinterpreters both regular and freelance as well as interpretation equipmenttechnicians and submit to the Director regular reports on the performance andefficiency of interpreters and technicians;
e. Assistthe Director by advising on interpretation equipment acquisition, maintenance and development to ensure the availability of adequate interpretation facilities at all times:
f. Adviseand consult with the Director on all matters relating to Interpretation;
g. Overseethe overall management of the Division: personnel, budget, performance,quality, discipline etc. in accordance with the relevant rules and procedure inforce;
h. Performany other duties that may be assigned to her/him by the Director.


  1. Qualifications and Experience Required

Candidates must have at least a University MastersDegree (in Languages or Economics, Law and Humanities) and Higher Diploma inInterpretation from a recognised international Interpretation School.

4. Professionalexperience required:
Candidates musthave at least 10 years experience as an interpreter and 3 years of relevantworking experience in managing and coordinating interpreters particularly atthe international level.

5. Otherrelevant skills:

  • Strongorganizational, managerial and leadership qualities
  • Abilityto manage a multilingual team;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Abilityto work under pressure and in a multicultural environment;
  • Excellentdrafting skills
  • Computer literacy.
  • Excellentknowledge of French and English language. A good knowledge of a third AUworking language would be an added advantage;


Language requirement


Proficiency in one of the African Union workinglanguages. Proficiency of one or several other working language(s) would be anadded advantage.

Age requirement:


Candidatesmust preferably be between 35 and 50 years old.

Tenure of Appointment:


The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for aperiod of three (3) years, of with thefirst twelve months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two (2) years renewable, subject tosatisfactory performance and deliverables.

10.Remuneration: Indicativebasic salary of US $45,551.00 per annum plus other related entitlements e.g. Post adjustment (46% of basic salary), Housing allowance ($16,819.20 per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other education related expenses forevery eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum),etc for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
