Joint UNICEF-TDR Implementation Research Project to strengthen maternal and child health through reduced mortality and loss-to-follow up in Africa
Over the past decades considerable progress has been made to reduce maternal and child mortality. In spite of this, numerous mothers and children continue to suffer from preventable and treatable conditions and illnesses and die despite the introduction of life saving high impact interventions. New efforts are needed to enhance understanding of the drivers of under-five mortality decline, where progress has varied widely between countries.
African country offices of UNICEF are invited to submit Letters of Intent in the following proposed priority topics, under respective research areas:
§ Identify the most disadvantage groups/populations, the risk factors that place them in this position and propose delivery and access options to overcome these risks.
§ Identify the determinants of low demand and utilization of existing services in selected countries (focusing on how best to overcome the financial, behavioural and social barriers) and recommend options for increasing demand and utilization for more equitable services.
§ Address and prevent frequent stock outs.
Program effectiveness and improved results
§ Determine the factors that influence Insecticide-Treated Net (ITN) durability and recommend how to improve sustained net-use.
§ Identify the determinants of successful strategies for maternal and new born survival programming – and recommend best practices.
§ Improve the quality of care provided.
Health systems and health behavior
§ Identify the determinants of behavioural changes necessary for meeting the targets of the open-defecation free agenda in the region – and make recommendations on how these changes can be incorporated into the implementation plan.
§ Identify how integrated MNCH interventions can be scaled up in countries with different degrees of health system strength (both organizational and financial).
§ Develop, refine and test new and improved community-based sustainable strategies for management of childhood fevers (e.g. integrated community case management, iCCM)
Eligibility:
All sub-Saharan African countries are eligible. Letters of intent should demonstrate involvement of key stakeholders at the country level.
The submission should be between three and five A4 pages (not more than five)
