PhD Student Search

The Organization

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), generates science-based knowledge about the complex role that trees play in agricultural landscapes and uses its research to ensure that policies and practices benefit the poor and the environment. Our vision is an 'agroforestry transformation' in the developing world—a massive increase in the use of trees on landscapes by smallholder rural households to ensure security in food, nutrition, income, health, shelter and energy, and a regenerated environment. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) conducts research in 23 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The Position:

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is seeking a PhD Student from Kenya or East Africa to engage in the following research activities:

1.       Measurement of GHG fluxes in a controlled environment (greenhouse, pots) with different application rates and types of biochar (which will be generated with a newly developed cook-pyrolysis stove);
2.       Analysis of C dynamics in pot and field experiments with δ13C analysis and incubation trials;
3.       Modelling of GHG dynamics of the pot and field experiments;
4.       Possibly measurement (and modelling) of GHG emissions in a micro-catchment where biochar is being applied at the farm level.

The successful applicant will have:

1.       MSc in agriculture, forestry, soil science or environmental sciences with strong natural science background
2.       Competence working with trace gases is strongly desirable
3.       Experience in modeling work (i.e. able to understand and modify source code) is strongly desirable
4.       Demonstrable inclination to research work or academics

Terms of Offer

ICRAF will offer a stipend of USD 13,200 per annum, subject to annual review.  All operational costs directly related to the research work will be fully covered by ICRAF.  There is possibility of the successful candidate spending some time at Cornell University, USA.
