The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).
ILRI is looking for a highly motivated, skilled and creative individual to contribute to the modelling, mapping and characterization of livestock production systems in Sub Saharan Africa. This position is part of the Harvest Choice II project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This project is coordinated by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), in collaboration with ILRI. The position is a two year term appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding, and is based at ILRI's Headquarters in Nairobi. Frequent travel in the region and to Washington DC is anticipated.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and manage the collection and harmonization of livestock statistics, and survey data;
- Lead the development of methods for improving the spatial allocation of livestock and crops in African farming systems;
- Contribute to the development of a farming systems classification scheme;
- Develop technology and management scenarios and parameter sets for improving crop and livestock modeling, regional feed balances and others.
Requirements
- PHD in Agronomy or livestock science;
- 2-3 years post doc experience;
- Demonstrate capacity for integrated farming systems analysis;
- Demonstrated knowledge of African farming systems;
- Proven quantitative skills on systems analysis and database development and management;
- Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team;
- Willing to travel locally and internationally;
- Crop and livestock modeling skills;
- GIS skills (desirable);
- Household modeling skills (desirable);
- Knowledge of econometric techniques (desirable).
