The Shuttleworth foundation offers fellowships to individuals to implement their innovative idea for social change. It is most interested in exceptional ideas at the intersection between openness, technology, knowledge and learning. The fellowship is not an academic fellowship aimed at research or academic study. Applicants should be social change agents who push boundaries and challenge accepted norms. Who can apply? Anyone who has an innovative idea for social change through fresh thinking that adds value in the areas of knowledge, learning and technology Anyone who has a clear vision of how the world can be a better place and the contribution they can make to bringing about the change The fellowship is not limited to any specific geographic location. However, applicants must be fluent in English Fellowship applicants must have attained the age of majority by the date of application This fellowship offers you the freedom and financial ability to bring about the change you envisage for the world as well as an enabling support structure and an existing network of social change agents. The Foundation will also support the Fellow to take their good ideas and turn them into successful initiatives. In addition, the Fellow will have access to potential project funding from the Foundation, who will match the Fellow's personal investment in projects by at least ten fold. The total grant amount will be based on the Fellow's qualifications, experience and comparable cost of time for their skill level. Fellows are expected to provide full time and attention to the focus area selected for their fellowship. The fellowship aims to free up the time of the Fellow to pursue their ideas in this area. Fellows are required to attend the bi-annual Fellows gatherings. Fellows are asked to live out loud, communicating openly and actively on their ideas, projects and strategies. Fellowship applications are reviewed by the Shuttleworth Foundation management team and advisors. Shortlisted candidates are selected for interviews. The Fiscal Affairs Department (FAD) of the International Monetary Fund is looking for an expert to fill a Public Financial Management (PFM) Advisor position in the IMF East Africa Regional Technical Assistance Center (AFRITAC East) based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. AFRITAC East covers seven countries in the region, namely Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. The initial appointment term would be for a period of one year starting June 2012, renewable by mutual agreement subject to satisfactory performance.

Duties:

The Advisor may be asked to provide technical assistance on a wide range of PFM areas including:

• the legal, regulatory, and institutional framework for budgeting and public financial management;
• medium-term budget/expenditure frameworks and annual budget formulation;
• program/performance budgeting and management;
• budget classifications and chart of accounts;
• budget execution and financial control, government banking, cash and debt management arrangements, treasury management;
• financial management information systems, and accounting and reporting; and
• fiscal decentralization.

Qualifications:

General requirements for candidates include:

• A university degree (at least at master's level) or equivalent qualification, preferably in economics and/or accounting.
• Proficiency in English: strong oral and written communication skills (including electronic media), and experience in preparing presentations using software such as PowerPoint.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team, maintain effective and cooperative relations with national authorities as well as donors, and handle sensitive issues with discretion in a multicultural environment.
• Ability to manage the work of short-term PFM experts.
• Experience in organizing and conducting training courses and workshops would be an advantage.

MA Film and History at SOAS (University of London)

This MA programme provides students with the opportunity to acquire expert knowledge of film in historical context as a means of mastering transferable analytical skills and so prepare students for a variety of professional or research careers. The program can be adapted to meet a wide range of interests. Its bi-directional focus on the disciplines of film and history also provides students with a flexible series of modular units from which to choose. The core course examines the representation of history in film, and film in history by placing filmic representations of the societies and diasporas of/from/between Asia and Africa into historical
context. Students will critically evaluate a range of issues relating to the reliability of film as the grounds for making inferences about the national and transnational histories of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East with particular attention to the critical evaluation of film as a source for, and product of, the historian¹s accounts of the past.

Students who enroll for this MA will engage in interdisciplinary analysis of film and history alongside SOAS academic who regularly consult for the film and television industries. Students will also be simultaneous members of the History Department and Film and Media Studies Centres which host regular
events including roundtables and panel discussions with leading academics and film makers. Internship opportunities also available to students registered on the MA Programme. INTRODUCTION

 

ICS, is a Dutch child development organization that aims at creating a safe and enabling environment in which all children-irrespective of their nationality, religion, colour, gender or political opinion-realize their rights to be protected, be educated and be healthy as well as being responsible members of society. The project officer, skilful parenting will be based at the ICS Africa, regional office in Nairobi.

 

ICS together with other participating partners jointly initiated a skilful parenting initiative in Africa (Parenting in Africa Network – PAN). PAN  is now a Network of member organisations in Africa with the aim of being a platform for  information and knowledge building and sharing on areas of concern around parenting in order to inspire programs with a focus on skilful parenting for the ultimate protection of children. 

 

JOB PROFILE

 

Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager Parenting in Africa Network (PAN), the Project Officer will provide technical support to the secretariat in coordination and organization of all research related activities necessary; to build a wealth of information on parenting as is required by the Network.

 

Specifically,

·         Ensure effective start and completion of baseline surveys, studies  and research commissioned  on parenting skills as per the approved work plans and within the chosen areas in collaboration with participating PAN members and partners.

·         Design and develop a parenting information database to support the programme data collection activities; and conducting literature reviews to support programme activities.

·         From time to time, engage in a wide range of research activities and employing a range of different research methodologies to enrich the information database of PAN.

·         Drafting research specifications and agreeing on terms of reference for research when  commissioning and project-managing research projects;

·         Developing  research instruments, such as questionnaires, FGD guides and editing draft reports while ensuring quality control of the process;

·         Conducting and analyzing studies with large scale data sets, with network members and other stakeholders.

·         Ensuring that research is conducted within a set time frame to meet programme requirements;

·         Providing information on existing research available in  the programme area;

·         Working in close partnership with external research contractors, other programme  colleagues during the course of the research

• Producing both written and oral briefs for colleagues and stakeholders , based on reviews of research evidence
• Responding to external and internal research enquiries from colleagues,  and stakeholders
• Support the PAN secretariat in design and use of an M&E system for the organization.
• Keeping up to date with developments in policy and social issues, as well as qualitative and quantitative research methods;
• Delivering presentations at conferences/ meetings

KEY DELIVERABLES (OUTPUTS)

1.   Programme  planning, coordination and implementation

 

·         Develop a comprehensive survey , research  and study proposals detailing the methodology, tools and timelines of data collection for each location.

·         Organize, plan and ensure quality is adhered to from start to end of the survey and research  project

·         Design and conduct training for enumerators and staff who will participate in the field data collection activities

·         Organize and undertake pre-testing of the data collection tools/instruments in liaison with the participating PAN members and PAN secretariat staff.

·         Support the secretariat in establishing and maintaining working relations with partners and collaborators in the skilful parenting program, specifically the research project.

·         Relationships with the community and partners effectively managed and opportunities for enhancing program activities identified and communicated.

·         Prepare written progress reports through various stages of research activities. 

·         In collaboration with participating organisations and secretariat staff, lead in data analysis and documentation of an end of project report.

·         Draft the entire research report in preparation for validation, publishing and  dissemination

·         Support the secretariat with design and installation of an M&E system for monitoring program activities.

 

 

2.   Internal and external relations

 

·         In collaboration with the Program Manager, maintains frequent contact with partners and member organisations implementing skilful parenting programs and "Parenting in Africa" network.

·         Represent the Network in partnership meetings, conferences or workshops as assigned by the Program Manager

 

 

SKILLS SUMMARY

 

·         Demonstrated working knowledge of social research methodology and study design

·         Must have experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods 

·         Ability to work under minimum  supervision

·         Ability  to communicate effectively (writing and verbally) in English and have basic fluency in Kiswahili

Location: This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya but will require travel to the field stations in the region, particularly within PAN participating organisations. 

 

Duration: Initial one year contract (Jan-Dec 2012) with possibility of extension subject to availability of funding
